Old School Mondays

It's funny all this time we've been doing OSM and I don't recall ever putting a Busta joint up. I mean from L.O.N.S. (Leaders of the New School) to Dangerous. Been really enjoying "Return to the 36 Chambers" too. Heavy Rotation for real!! So here's a few jump offs for todays edition of OSM.

The Church Of Underground Hip Hop In The 90s

When I started high school in 1993 there were a few albums that came out and completely rocked my world. "Enta Da Stage" by Black Moon, "Enter the 36 Chambers" by Wu-Tang and "Doggystyle" by Snoop were amongst this great new hip hop. Around this time I discovered the college radio shows like Mr. Magic and Mr. Cee's show on 91.5 FM. I used to listen to this show every Thursday at around 10pm. Nothing would keep me from the radio when they started. It was on this show that I would learn about the latest dope hip hop that the major stations like Hot 97 didn't play yet. I discovered cats like Mic Geronimo, Camp Lo and The Alkaholiks. This is the hip hop that I just wasn't used to yet but came to love.

Mr. Cee and Magic would have contests for listeners to call in and receive things like promo single CDs and albums. I once got through on the call in, and won the Cella Dwellas debut album "Realms and Reality". I unfortunately never received that album and called Mr. Cee to tell him. He was very cordial even though I never got the album. Maybe it was lost in the mail. One prize however was received, and it was won by my MOTHER not me. She was listening to the show with me one night and was the winner of a Mary J Blige single. It was the first CD in my household ever.

I was limited on cassette tapes to record from the radio so I would be very careful with what I taped and what I didn't. Space was precious and wack songs along with idle talk had no place on my tapes. I now wish I had those discussions on tape as it was a precious time in my life. Mr. Magic is now deceased and many of the songs I heard back then are either rare or forgotten all together.
Look out for part 2 as I discuss another show from that era.

Kanye Goes Wild But He's No Ol Dirty

Let me start out by saying I don't watch cable much. I haven't seen MTV in almost a year if not more. However I couldn't get away from the VMAs last night on twitter. And when Kanye West got up on stage and made himself look even less classier than normal (as if possible) my stomach sank a little bit. I just couldn't believe he took it upon himself to completely ruin that young lady's moment. But then why is that, it isn't like this is the first time he's done this. He's a complainer and has been from the moment he got a mic in his hand. Kanye's whole shtick is "look at me! look at me!" which is what an entertainer is supposed to do however he does it with no holds barred. Kanye doesn't care if blood is left on the dance floor as long as he has his moment.

While on Twitter I saw someone mention Kanye set black people back 40 years. I also saw someone mention how this action was a negative reflection on black entertainers. What the hell are these people talking about? Kanye is a jerk because Kanye is a jerk. There are plenty of jerks in the world of all colors (not as many on Kanye's level but you get my point). What he did had nothing to do with him being black. It had everything to do (IMO) with him thinking the world owes him something. But who are we kidding, this will all blow over and his next album will drop and yall will all go and buy it (I haven't copped since Late Registration).

My final point is this wasn't even the greatest grandstanding moment at an awards show. That #1 spot my friends goes to the late great Ol Dirty Bastard. Dirty dissed Puff at his height after B.I.G died two awards or so after Wu Tang lost. This was AT THE GRAMMYS! Chew on that one.

Old School Mondays

In case you didn't know Shallah Raekwon aka Raekwon The Chef dropped a new album last week titled Only Built 4 Cuban Linx 2. Now Rae dropped two albums since the first Cuban Linx record and they were forgettable at best. However this one is supposed to be a banger and is the substitute record to cop in light of Jay-Z's latest misstep of an album.

Lets go through some old Wu-Tang videos to see what made the Gods so special to begin with.

Live performance of one of my favorite Wu joints. Peep the lyrics about AIDS.

This is my favorite song from the Enter the Wu Tang album.

Seeing this video let me know I was copping OB4CL the first day. Peep the Helly Hansons!

And just so you know the brothers haven't lost it here a new joint from the OB4CL2.

Raekwon the Chef - House of Flying Daggers (RadioRip)

I love Only Built 4 Cuban Linx as an album. Raekwon and Ghostface lead the charge on a classic Wu Tang record back then. Now Rae is coming back with the sequel finally dropping in a little over a month and the people are ready. I've gotta say that dropping nuggets like this only helps to build the anticipation. This latest jam has Rae's Wu-Tang brothers Mef, Ghost and Deck going ape on a ill track. You gotta love it bottom line. Between this new joint and "New Wu" this could be a banging album.

Check the joint.

Are we in Seattle? Everyday It Rains (c) MJB

I'm sick of the weather, just like you are. I have things to do and I don't even want to leave the bed these days. *smh* This is the worst June I've EVER experienced in my life. The first day of Summer is a few days away and ...whatever man.

Here's a few songs.
